Installing wallpaper can be a great way to add personality and style to any room in your home. However, the process can be intimidating if you've never done it before. With our step-by-step installation guide, you'll be able to achieve a flawless finish and transform your space in no time.
Gather Your Materials and Tools.
Before you begin installing your wallpaper, it's important to gather all the necessary materials and tools. You'll need wallpaper, wallpaper paste, a wallpaper brush or roller, a smoothing tool, a utility knife, a level, a measuring tape, a pencil, a ladder, and a drop cloth. Make sure you have everything you need before you start to avoid any interruptions during the installation process.
Prepare the Wall Surface.
The first step in installing wallpaper is to prepare the wall surface. This involves cleaning the wall and making any necessary repairs. Start by removing any old wallpaper or loose paint. Use a scraper or putty knife to gently scrape away any remaining adhesive or paint. Next, wash the wall with a solution of warm water and mild soap to remove any dirt or grease. Rinse the wall with clean water and allow it to dry completely. Finally, inspect the wall for any cracks or holes and fill them with spackling compound. Sand the surface smooth and wipe away any dust with a damp cloth. Your wall is now ready for wallpaper installation.
Measure and Cut Your Wallpaper.
Once your wall is prepped and ready, it’s time to measure and cut your wallpaper. Measure the height of your wall and add a few inches to allow for trimming at the top and bottom. Roll out your wallpaper on a clean surface and measure out the length you need, adding a few inches for trimming. Use a straight edge and a sharp utility knife to cut your wallpaper to size. Be sure to match the pattern if your wallpaper has one. Repeat this process for each strip of wallpaper you’ll need to cover your wall.
Apply Wallpaper Paste.
Once your wallpaper is cut to size, it’s time to apply the wallpaper paste. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mixing the paste and apply it to the back of your wallpaper using a wallpaper brush or roller. Be sure to apply the paste evenly and cover the edges well. Fold the wallpaper in on itself, paste to paste, and let it sit for a few minutes to activate the adhesive. This is called “booking” the wallpaper.
Hang Your Wallpaper.
Once your wallpaper has been booked, it’s time to hang it on the wall. Start at the top of the wall and use a plumb line or level to ensure that your first strip is straight. Smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles with a wallpaper brush or smoothing tool. Continue hanging strips of wallpaper, matching the pattern as you go. Trim any excess wallpaper at the ceiling and baseboards with a sharp utility knife. Finally, use a seam roller to ensure that all seams are flat and secure.
